Two Minds, One Body

If you aren’t a big fan of the Twilight saga, you should try giving Stephenie Meyer’s other novel The Host a try.

Unlike TwilightThe Host isn’t about vampires or werewolves. It’s about tiny, spider-like aliens that have taken over Earth, better known as souls. The souls “invaded” Earth (along with many other planets with strange names) and took over the human race. The souls are implanted into human hosts, pushing out the human’s conscience.

The souls took over Earth because humans are too violent. The souls, on the other hand, are law-abiding, honest citizens. They work because it needs to be done. Going to the grocery store is like stealing — nothing has to be paid for.

There are still a few humans out there, but they’re on the run. If they’re caught, the souls will be implanted in their bodies, and they will cease to exist.

But there’s a human who refuses to give in to her soul, and a soul who refuses to lose her body’s conscience. And together, they start a war against the souls.

I couldn’t put it down, and I bet you won’t be able to either. And if you don’t get around to reading it, don’t worry — they’re making a movie in 2013.
