The red carpet isn’t the only place for journalism

It’s raining cats and dogs and thundering and lightning pretty good outside. In other words, it’s a great night to be curled up in bed watching the Oscars.

I’ve never thought of it before, but awards shows are journalism. They’re like TV broadcasts: the hosts and presenters read from scripts and let viewers know what great accomplishments came from the film industry this year. It’s not just about who wore what, who said what or who won what. It’s about 83 years of greatness rolled into one night.

It’s amazing what great work comes out of Hollywood each year.

For 2011, here are some of the best:

Best Costume Design: Alice in Wonderland

Best Directing: The King’s Speech

Best Lead Actress: Natalie Portman, Black Swan

Best Lead Actor: Colin Firth, The King’s Speech

Best Animated Film: Toy Story 3

Best Motion Picture: The King’s Speech

In the words of Natalie Portman, “I’m so in awe of you.”
