The PR side of journalism

I’ve never been involved in a promotional event for a publication before. But today, I got to help out at the Mid-Missouri Home & Lifestyle Expo, which turned out to be a lot of fun.

Inside Columbia’s booth was ‘The Ultimate Man Cave’, complete with pool and shuffleboard tables. All of the things in the man cave were donated by companies in Columbia to advertise their business and products. We just had to hand out the Design Guide and the latest edition of ICM while people enjoyed the space and watched the basketball game or NASCAR race on TV.

I never thought that I would enjoy promoting a magazine, but I had fun. When you’re at a promotional event like that, what people see registers a lot, especially when it comes to the magazine’s employees. I was the face of the magazine for two hours today, which was cool.

Today I also went to Canstruction for a story in CEO, a magazine published by ICM. It was neat to see members of Columbia’s professional community building structures out of canned goods for a good cause. All of the cans used during construction were donated to the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri — about 11,000 cans of food!
